'Works with Apple Home' vs Matter
Short answer: no. "Works with Apple Home" is a marketing label. It can mean a modern Matter device, or an older HomeKit-only device. Both work with Apple — but only Matter also works with Google and Alexa.
How to tell them apart
- Look for the Matter logo on the box or listing. If it's there, it's cross-ecosystem.
- Search the spec sheet for "Matter" or "Thread". No mention = likely HomeKit-only.
- Check the pairing code: Matter codes carry the Matter logo; HomeKit codes are the classic Apple setup code.
Does it matter for you?
If you're all-in on Apple, a HomeKit-only device is fine. If you mix Apple with Google/Alexa, or want to switch later, buy Matter. Our matrix labels each device's protocol so you don't have to guess: open the matrix →
