Thread vs Wi-Fi
Both carry Matter traffic to Apple Home. The difference is power, reliability and setup.
| Thread | Wi-Fi | |
|---|---|---|
| Power | Very low (battery devices last years) | Higher (usually mains-powered) |
| Needs | A Thread border router (HomePod mini / Apple TV 4K) | Just your router |
| Mesh | Self-healing, gets stronger with more devices | Shares your Wi-Fi airtime |
| Best for | Sensors, locks, buttons | Cameras, always-on devices |
Rule of thumb
Battery devices (sensors, locks) → Thread. Cameras and high-bandwidth gear → Wi-Fi. Either is fine for Apple Home; both need the right protocol support (Matter or HomeKit) on top.
