Best Matter hub for Apple Home
A hub does two jobs: it keeps your Apple Home running (remote access, automations) and, if it supports Thread, it acts as a border router for Thread devices.
Apple's own hubs (best default)
- HomePod mini — cheapest Thread border router + Apple Home hub. The default choice.
- Apple TV 4K (2nd/3rd gen) — hub + Thread border router; ideal if it's already in your living room.
- HomePod (2nd gen) — hub + Thread + better speakers.
Third-party hubs (for bridges)
Need a Zigbee/Aqara or SwitchBot ecosystem inside Apple Home? A vendor hub exposes those devices via Matter:
- Aqara Hub M3 — Thread border router + Matter bridge for Aqara Zigbee devices.
- SwitchBot Hub 2 — brings SwitchBot gear into Apple Home via Matter.
Do you even need one?
If all your devices are Matter over Wi-Fi, you can skip the hub — until you want remote access or automations, which need an Apple Home hub anyway. If you own Thread devices, you need a border router. See which is which in the matrix.
