Apple Home automations
Automations are what turn a pile of smart devices into a smart home. Most useful ones run on a hub, not your phone.
The building blocks
- Trigger: a time, a sensor (motion/door), a person arriving/leaving, or an accessory state.
- Condition: only if it's after sunset, only if nobody's home, etc.
- Action: turn on lights, lock doors, set the thermostat.
Hub-based vs phone-based
“When I leave” and “when motion is detected” automations need an Apple Home hub (HomePod/Apple TV) to run when your phone isn't home. Without a hub, they simply won't fire.
Tips for reliability
- Prefer sensor triggers over “when I arrive” if GPS is flaky.
- Keep Thread mesh strong — more mains-powered Thread devices strengthen the network.
- Test before you rely on it.
